The Peasant Farmers Association of Ghana (PFAG) has called on President John Dramani Mahama to prioritise the appointment of a skilled and experienced Minister of Agriculture as he forms his new government.

In a congratulatory message, PFAG emphasised the need for a minister with a strong background in agriculture who can address the challenges of the sector and engage effectively with stakeholders.

“We humbly request a minister with practical expertise, a strong agricultural background, and the ability to connect with stakeholders across the value chain,” said PFAG President Wepia Awal Adugwala.

The Association highlighted the importance of engaging smallholder farmers and tackling systemic issues to promote agricultural growth.

The peasant farmers also called for an audit of the Pwalugu Multi-Purpose Dam, which they say has been mismanaged under the previous government. They urged the president to recover illegal funds and allocate resources for the dam’s construction within his first 120 days.

The group also appealed for an end to mining in forests, farmlands, and river bodies and urged government to develop a land reclamation plan to restore damaged farmlands.

“We are hopeful that under your leadership, the full potential of smallholder farmers and the agricultural sector will be realised,” the group stated.

The Association expressed confidence in President Mahama’s ability to promote inclusive, efficient, and effective governance in the agricultural sector.
