Piwak Natural Health has donated GH¢200,000 to support victims of the Akosombo Dam spillage disaster in the North Tongu District of the Volta Region. The Chief Executive Officer of Piwak Natural Health, Dr. Prince Nelson Mortoti, presented GH¢1,000 each to 200 affected persons drawn from North, Central, and South Tongu.
The gesture, which marks the second phase of the company’s relief support, directly benefits 80 victims from North Tongu, 60 from Central Tongu, and another 60 from South Tongu.
“This is not charity—it is responsibility,” Dr. Mortoti emphasised during his speech. “You have suffered enough. You deserve support that restores not just your life, but your dignity.”
The donation follows an earlier relief effort by the company in October 2023, when it provided emergency items worth over GH¢40,000, including food, sanitary supplies, and clothing to affected households.
Dr. Mortoti, a native of the area, described the disaster as “a man-made crisis” with lasting emotional and economic impacts. He called on the government, private sector, and civil society to continue rebuilding efforts and include disaster victims in national planning—particularly in the 2025 budget.
“While the floods may have displaced our homes, they have not displaced our humanity. They have not drowned our spirit,” he said, under the theme “Rebuilding Together, Restoring Hope.” Dr. Mortoti assured that Piwak Natural Health remains committed to supporting affected communities—not just in times of crisis, but as long-term partners in healing and development.
The District Chief Executive (DCE) for North Tongu, Mrs. Victoria Amefadzi Yawa-Doe, commended Piwak Natural Health for the timely intervention. She noted that the donation would bring much-needed relief to many families in the district who are still grappling with the aftermath of the flood disaster.
The Municipal Chief Executive (MCE) for South Tongu, Mrs. Victoria Dzeklo, also expressed appreciation for the support, stating that the financial aid would go a long way in helping victims rebuild their lives. She called on other stakeholders to join in supporting the ongoing recovery efforts, especially in the area of psychological counseling.
The DCE for Central Tongu, Mr. Addison Dzodi Mornyuie, praised the initiative as a model of private sector partnership in disaster recovery. He emphasised that such gestures not only alleviate immediate hardship but also complement government efforts to restore livelihoods.
One beneficiary, Feneku Fidelia, overwhelmed with gratitude, shared how the donation would impact her life.
“I lost everything, and I’ve been living in the camp with my children for months since the disaster. This money will help me restart my business, which was completely destroyed. I’m very grateful to Dr. Mortoti for thinking of us.”
The event was attended by traditional leaders, local government representatives, and community members.
