The CID of the Ghana Police Service has denied the allegation of arrest and detention of the Editor-In-Chief of WhatsApp News, David Tamakloe at gun point.

This is contained in a statement signed by Head of Public Affairs of the CID, DSP Juliana Obeng.

On Thursday April 1, 2021, Mr. Tamakloe was alleged to have been arrested on offences of attempt to commit crime to wit: extortion contrary to section 18(1) and 151(1) and publication of false news contrary to section 208 of the Criminal Offences Act, 1960 (Act 29).

Suspect after being cautioned has been released on Police enquiry bail with a surety to report on Tuesday April 6, 2021 for further action.

Earlier, a member of the Constitutional, Legal, and Parliamentary Affairs Committee of Parliament, Rockson Dafeamekpor accused the Police of abuse of powers with the “Rambo style” arrest of David Tamakloe.

In an interview, Mr. Dafeamekpor, who is Member of Parliament (MP) for South Dayi said the action by the Police to arrest and detain the journalist until after the Easter festivities, is inhumane and smacks of abuse of police powers.

He said the arrest was an attempt to stop the story from going public which is not right, and called for his release.
