The Ghana Police Service is considering total restructuring of its operations following the recent spate of killings of its personnel by criminals.

In the last 30 days five police officers have been killed in the line of duty with the most recent being Wednesday 28, 2019, where two officers were shot dead by gunmen around Budumburam on the Kasoa-Winneba Highway in the Central region.

Three suspects Ibrahim Zakaria, Isaac Amissah and Dominic Commey have so far been arrested.

Two other suspects are said to be on the run. Despite the arrests, the frequent killings have brought to question the operations of the Service and raised concerns of insecurity especially since those expected to protect citizens are themselves being killed.

Speaking on GBC’s Current Affairs Program ‘Behind the News, the Director General of the Public Affairs’ Directorate of the Ghana Police Service, ACP David Eklu asked Ghanaians to remain calm while the Service restructures to improve on the safety of its personnel as well as all Ghanaians.

Also speaking on the incident, Conflict and Security Analyst, Colonel Festus Aboagye said the leadership of the Police Service must ensure that it is well equipped in order not to be highly exposed.

He appealed to government to provide more equipment to the Service to enable the officers to carry out their duties diligently.
