Following a meeting between VALCO Union Executives and the Minister for Lands and Natural Resources, power has been restored to VALCO.
Management is also expected to announce the restart of the plant and also indicate when all non management staff should start work.
On October 31, 2022, workers at VALCO demonstrated against 12 retirees who are still at post.
According to the workers the presence of the retirees at the company is affecting the financial gains of the company.
Following the protest, management of the company shut down the Smelters. A total of 119 cells were shut down and according to the workers, it will cost a 100 thousand dollars to bring back one cell.
The Union Chairman of VALCO, Mr. Edgar Tetteh explained that the country stands to lose 20 thousand dollars a day with the shutdown of the Aluminium smelter.
He therefore called on the President to institute investigations into the issues raised by the workers and management of the company.
On Monday, November 7, 2022, a meeting was held between VALCO Union Executives and the Minister for Lands and Natural Resources. And the parties agreed to restore power to VALCO.
