President Akufo-Addo promises to address overcrowding in Ghana’s prisons

President Akufo-Addo has described as unacceptable conditions prevailing in the country’s prisons. He said issues of overcrowding which have characterised the prisons will be addressed.

President Akufo-Addo said this when the Ghana Chapter of Amnesty International paid a courtesy call on him at the Jubilee House.

The group wants government to remove the Death Penalty on the country’s Statutes books since it is contrary to international laws.

Amnesty International is a global Human Rights movement with about seven million members globally and 6,500 in Ghana.

The visit to the Jubilee House was to discuss key human rights issues. Among them were, abolishing the death penalty, ensuring proper regulations on evictions, improving conditions in prisons, advocating access to justice for all and others.

They commended efforts by the government to improve the working conditions of Ghanaians. These include the implementation of the free SHS which has increased access to education, NABCO among others.

Lawyer Martin Kpebu made a strong case for the abolition of the death penalty.

Another member of Amnesty international, Samuel Agbotsey spoke on the need to decongest the Country’s prisons.

President Akufo-Addo said government will do everything to deal with overcrowding in the Prisons.
