Head of the Business and Economic Bureau at the Ghana Union of Traders Associations (GUTA), Charles Kusi Appiah Kubi, has argued that Ghana needs to prioritize the development of factories that support agriculture over building car manufacturing plants in order to address the persistent problem of high food prices.

Mr. Appiah Kubi made these remarks during an interview with Thelma Tackie on GTV’s Breakfast Show on Monday, April 14, 2025.

He emphasized Ghana’s reliance on imported inputs for agriculture, which contributes to high costs.

“The majority of the things that we use in Ghana are imported. You’re talking about tomatoes. Have you forgotten the input of farming? Which fertilizer is part of them? We do import fertilizers. Then we decide the insecticides are imported, this builds up to those prices we see in the market,” Mr. Appiah Kubi explained.

He stressed the need for a fundamental shift in approach. “Until we decide to look at what we can do differently when it comes to agriculture. We will not go anywhere,” Kubi stated.

Mr. Appiah Kubi then articulated his vision for prioritizing agricultural manufacturing.

“I have professed that instead of building cars in Ghana, let’s build factories that will supply agriculture. Let’s build factories that will make agriculture much more mechanized. Until that is done, this is the story we’ll be telling,” he argued.
