Interior Ministry declares January 8 as public holiday

In light of Constitution Day falling on Sunday, January 7th, 2024, the Government through the Interior ministry, has issued an Executive Instrument designating Monday, January 8th, 2024, as an additional Public Holiday.

This declaration, in accordance with Section 2 of the Public Holidays and Commemorative Days Act (Act 601), extends the observance of Constitution Day throughout the country.

The Ministry of Interior released a press statement on January 2nd, 2024, signed by the Interior Minister, Ambrose Dery, conveying this information to the public.

According to the press release, the general public is expected to observe Constitution Day across the country.

“The general public is hereby informed that Sunday, 7th January 2024 marks Constitution Day which is a Statutory Public Holiday.

However, in view of the fact that 7th January,2024 falls on a Sunday, His Excellency, the President of the Republic of Ghana, has by Executive Instrument (E.I), in accordance with Section 2 of the Public Holidays and Commemorative Days Act, (Act 601) declared Monday, 8th January, 2024 as an additional Public Holiday and should be observed as such throughout the country.”

The constitutional holiday serves as a recognition of the 4th republican constitutional dispensation of Ghana which started on January 7, 1993. This holiday is also to recognize the country’s effort to maintain and sustain the 4th republic over the years.
