The Public Utility Regulatory Commission (PURC) says the two utility companies Electricity Company of Ghana (ECG) and the Ghana Water Company (GWCL) have made a strong case for a new tariff regime that will cover their operational cost.
Head of Public Relations of PURC, Bawa Munkaila told Nathaniel Nartey that the proposals will be reviewed to determine their merit.
The proposed increase in electricity tariffs by the Electricity Company of Ghana, ECG has met stiff opposition by a section of the public.
Majority of the people said given the prevailing economic situation in the country, it will be unreasonable for the ECG to entertain any idea of tariffs adjustment.
Managing Director of ECG, Kwame Agyeman-Budu is reported to have said at a public forum last week that the company needs more funds to support its operations and be more effective. He, therefore, proposed an increase in electricity tariffs.
The proposal as it stands does not augur well for the public. Speaking to GBC NEWS, those sampled called for an upward review of public sector worker’s salaries and improved power supply before the ECG makes any proposal.
