Minister-Designate for Labour, Jobs, and Employment, Abdul-Rashid Hassan Pelpuo, has reaffirmed his commitment to eliminating child labor in Ghana. During his ministerial vetting on Thursday, January 30, 2025, Dr. Pelpuo emphasized the need to make child labor a criminal offense, ensuring that perpetrators are held accountable.

Dr. Pelpuo shared his experience visiting the European Union to address concerns over child labor in Ghana. He explained that the EU’s key concern was the use of child labor, particularly in the cocoa industry. Dr. Pelpuo stated that while some children may accompany their parents to work, this cultural practice has evolved into a problematic working condition.

“The issue of child labour is a serious one, and we need to address it head-on,” Dr. Pelpuo stated. “We must eliminate child labor from our workforce and make it a criminal offense so that nobody can engage in it and go free without reason.”

Dr. Pelpuo’s commitment to tackling child labor is rooted in his extensive experience in governance and public service. As a former Minister of State at the Office of the President and Minister for Youth and Sports, Dr. Pelpuo has demonstrated his ability to drive policy changes and promote youth development.
