A new report by Afrobarometer has revealed that many Ghanaians are considering leaving the country for better opportunities.
According to the survey, 61% of Ghanaians have thought about emigrating, a sharp increase from 41% in 2017.
The main reasons for this trend are the search for jobs and the desire to escape economic hardship. The 2024 report shows that 55% of potential emigrants are looking for work, while 33% want to escape financial struggles.
Who Wants to Leave?
The survey found that the most educated citizens, young people, and the unemployed are the most likely to consider moving abroad.
78% of people with higher education have thought about leaving.
72% of young people (18-35 years old) are considering emigration.
68% of unemployed Ghanaians have considered leaving, along with 65% of part-time workers and 63% of full-time workers.
Where Do They Want to Go?
The most preferred destinations for Ghanaians seeking to migrate are:
North America – 55%
Europe – 24%
The report also noted that the number of Ghanaians giving serious thought to emigrating has more than doubled since 2017, rising from 20% to 44%.
With economic difficulties pushing more people to seek opportunities abroad, experts believe that addressing unemployment and financial challenges could help reduce this growing trend.
