Research conducted at Jumapo, a town in the New Juaben North Municipality of the Eastern Region has shown that 33 out of one hundred and 41 adolescent girls between the ages of 11 and 14 years got pregnant and reported back to school after the COVID-19 break.
This development has been attributed to peer pressure and lack of parental control. To stem this menace, the New Juaben North Health Directorate is forming Girls Clubs in schools to educate pupils especially girls on the dangers of teenage pregnancy.
The Eastern Regional Public Health Nurse, Ellen Asare in an interview with GBC NEWS, noted that it has become necessary for the children especially young girls to be taught Adolescent Reproductive System, ARS, and the consequences of engaging in early sex.
The Physician Assistant at the Jumapo Health Centre, Dr. Winifred Paddy said the figures need to be reduced.
This he explained is the reason why the health center is embarking on the educational drive in basic schools to educate the girls to abstain from early sex.
