The Minister-designate for Labour, Jobs, and Employment, Abdul-Rashid Hassan Pelpuo, has said that any decision to increase the retirement age for public sector workers should be based on a national consensus.
During his vetting, he was asked whether he would consider raising the retirement age for civil and public service workers, with some suggesting an increase to 65 or even 70 years.
In response, Pelpuo acknowledged the ongoing debate, saying, “Some people argue that they are still strong at that age, so why should they retire?”
However, he emphasized that such a decision should come from broad consultations with stakeholders.
“It should be a decision we take together as a country, considering our economy and capacity to implement it,” he said.
He added that, as a nominee facing parliamentary approval, he could not make a definitive statement but would support discussions on necessary reforms.
The issue of retirement age remains a key topic in Ghana, with some advocating for an extension to retain experienced workers, while others argue it could limit opportunities for younger employees.
