Road traffic crashes remain the leading cause of accidental deaths in the country accounting for 39 percent of deaths reported in 2020.
At least three people die every day and get injured in road accidents each day thus seeing an increase of over 18 percent that is 1,085 to 1,276 compared to data collected in 2019.
This is contained in a report by Ghana Public Safety and Crime Report 2020 by the Bureau of Public Safety.
The report which covers data from January 1 to December 31 2020 looked at crime, fire related incidents, transportation, civil disturbances, police officer casualties and police brutalities among others.
It noted that averagely, one person is accidentally killed each day in a preventable occurrence.
Reports of violent crime 2020 reduced by 8 percent, specifically, there were significant decreases in reported cases of murder or manslaughter, aggravated assault, armed robbery,and burglary cases.
Despite decreases in reported cases of violent crime, manslaughter continues to dominate reported cases with aggravated assault recording 33 percent and armed robbery 38 percent thus seeing a decrease significantly for the first time since 2017.
