The Minister for Sanitation and Water Resources, Ms. Seyram Alhassan, has commended the operators of the Wastewater Treatment Plant and Medical Waste Treatment Facility in the Western Region. During a facility tour, the minister expressed satisfaction with the operations, noting that the facilities align with the region’s development goals and are functioning effectively.
The facilities offer a sustainable solution to the uncontrolled dumping of medical waste and faecal sludge. The €20 million Takoradi Wastewater Treatment Plant has the capacity to treat 10,000 cubic meters of liquid waste daily. Additionally, the Medical Waste Treatment Plant, equipped with two state-of-the-art treatment units, can handle an average of 5,000 kilograms of hazardous waste daily. This facility is part of a broader initiative by the Jospong Group of Companies, in collaboration with the government and other stakeholders, to establish centralized medical waste treatment facilities nationwide.
Ms. Alhassan emphasized the government’s commitment to collaborating with the private sector to invest further in the sanitation sector, with plans to establish more such facilities across the country. She also mentioned the upcoming operation of the IRECOP facility, which has been delayed due to capacity upgrades. Once operational, this facility is expected to recycle about 90% of the region’s waste, thereby generating employment opportunities.
During the tour, the Western Regional Minister, Mr. Kwabena Okyere Darko-Mensah, noted that the facility is now processing 10 trucks of waste daily. The sanitation minister also inspected the Takoradi-Sekondi water expansion project at Daboase, which is about 65% complete. The visit was part of the minister’s familiarization tour, aimed at gaining firsthand insight into development projects in the region since she assumed office in May this year.
