The custodians of Dagbon traditions led by the Gushei Naa and Kugnaa have nominated the Paramount Chief of Savelugu and Head of the Andani Royal Family, Yoo Naa Abukari Mahama (VII), as the new Overlord (Ya-Na) of the Dagbon Traditional Area in the Northern Region.

The Chief of Savulugu, Yoo Naa Abubakar who is the head of the Andani Royal family in Dagbon succeeds the late Ya Naa Yakubu Andani who died in 2002.
The nomination is in line with the customs and traditions in respect of succession to the Kingship of Dagbon.

The new Ya-Na, who is 70 years, was selected by kingmakers of Dagbon, led by Kuga-Naa and Gushei-Naa after consulting oracles of the area on Friday.

His selection followed the successful performance of funerals of the two late Overlords of the area, Ya-Na Mahamadu Abdulai (IV) and Ya- Na Yakubu Andani (II) from December 14, 2018 to December 28, 2018, and January 11, 2019 to January 18, 2019 respectively.

The performance of the funerals and the selection of the new Ya-Na were in line with the road map announced by the Committee of Eminent Chiefs that mediated the Dagbon chieftaincy crisis to restore peace to the traditional area.

The new Ya-Naa will move to Katini, a traditional village at Yendi, to undergo the necessary customary rites to officially assume authority as the Overlord of the Dagbon traditional area.

Also president Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo has congratulated the new Ya-Naa, Yo-Naa, the Savelugu Naa, Abubakari Mahama and the people of Dagbon, especially the Andani and Abudu Royal families.
