A 45-year-old timber Merchant, Mahamudu Saani has been shot dead in a shootout between the Forestry Monitoring Team and a Gang in a forest near Frimponkrom, a suburb of Nkrankwanta in the Dormaa West District of the Bono Region.
The Bono Regional Police PRO, Chief Inspector Augustine Kingsley Oppong in an interview with GBC’s Radio Ghana, said investigations are underway and the body of the deceased has since been deposited at the Dormaa Presby Hospital awaiting autopsy.
According to the Police on Friday, December 10, 2020, the Forestry Monitoring Team from Dormaa during a joint patrol with the Military came across loaded lumber truck in a forest near Frimponkrom.
The Bono Regional Police PRO, Chief Inspector Augustine Kinsley-Oppong in an interview, further revealed that information from the Forestry Monitoring Team indicates they were attacked by some youth from Frimponkrom after sighting the truck, and one of them named Mohammed Saani, 45, was hit by friendly fire.
The Youth on the other hand maintained that the deceased was killed by the Forestry Monitoring team.
He said investigations are underway to unravel the truth, adding that, about a day or two after the incident the youth torched the Offices of the Forestry Services Division in Nkrankwanta. They then attempted to burn the Dormaa branch of the Forestry Commission, but for the timely intervention of the military and police, with support from some residents of Dormaa.
No arrest has been made so far in connection with the killing of Mohammed Saani and investigations continue.
