Six arrested for illegal mining

Six persons indulging in illegal mining have been arrested by the Forestry Commission in the Akontombra District of the Western North Region.

The suspects who are with the Sefwi Wiawso Divisional Police, are being processed to appear before court.

The District Manager of the Forestry Commission in Sefwi Wiawso, Nana Poku Bosompim, who uncovered this in an interview with a Radio Ghana Correspondent, said the Forestry Officers made the arrest during their operation upon a tip off.

He said their team retrieved a gold detector machine which was being used for the galamsey activity in the forest at Essase and Kojobikrom which fall within the Bodi and Akontombra Districts of the Region.

He disclosed that about two hectares of land has been destroyed due to illegal mining.
