Former Chief Justice and newly sworn-in member of the Council of State, Madam Sophia Abena Boafoa Akuffo, has commended President John Dramani Mahama for honouring contractual agreements with bondholders.
According to her, President Mahama’s decision to uphold these agreements is a testament to his commitment to the rule of law.
Speaking to journalists at Jubilee House in Accra on Tuesday, February 18, 2025, after being sworn in alongside 30 other members of the Council of State, Madam Akuffo explained that the President’s stance on bondholder payments was in accordance with the law.
She stated categorically that her decision to join other bondholders in picketing at the Ministry of Finance was not for personal gain but rather because she had a legal contract—a bond.
“I took part in the picket at the Ministry of Finance during the Akufo-Addo administration because the state had made promises to bondholders. When the terms were abruptly changed, it was an attempt to force new conditions on us,” she noted.
The Former Chief Justice expressed satisfaction with President Mahama’s decision, stating that, in her opinion, it demonstrates his respect for legal commitments.
“The state had promised me something, and so I made my money available. Then, suddenly, they wanted to change the terms and force new conditions on me. No. That would never be, and I’m happy that the President has shown he is law-abiding,” she emphasized.
The Ministry of Finance, under the directive of President John Dramani Mahama, on Monday, February 17, 2025, settled the Payment-In-Cash (PIC) coupon of GH¢6.081 billion to all Domestic Debt Exchange Programme (DDEP) bondholders.
