The Speaker of Parliament Alban Bagbin has called on the government to showcase more efforts in safeguarding the country’s water bodies.

The issue was brought to the floor of the House by the MP for North Tongu, Samuel Okudzeto Ablakwa. Mr. Bagbin said posterity will not forgive the current generation if the water bodies are not protected.

Mr. Ablakwa was alarmed at the extent of devastation Galamsey activities are causing to water bodies.

His submission was seconded by the MP for Bodi, Samson Ahi who equally called on the government to play a much stronger role in halting the activities of illegal miners.

Minister for Sanitation and Water Resources, Lydia Syram Alhassan, recounted interventions by the government in dealing with the menace.

Minister for Defence, Dominic Ntiwul, called on MP’s not to politicize the galamsey issue and called on members to provide information on operators of the activity to help the security agencies tackle it head on.
