Speaker of Parliament clarifies issues on legalization of cannabis

No person will be allowed to disrupt parliamentary proceedings, Speaker Bagbin assures

Speaker of Parliament, Alban Bagbin

The Speaker of Parliament, Alban Bagbin has explained that Parliament did not legalize cannabis for recreational purposes. According to him, it is not in the interest of parliament to promote the use or smoking of cannabis.

Parliament some weeks ago, passed the Narcotics Control Commission Bill, 2023 into law. The passing grants the Interior Ministry the authority to issue licenses for the cultivation of cannabis for industrial or medicinal purposes.

Speaking in Parliament, Mr Bagbin asserted that Parliament remains committed to ensure that cannabis is not legalized in the country in accordance with the Constitution.

Mr Bagbin said the cultivation and distribution of any narcotic plants without any lawful authority remains an offense.

He charged the police and other law enforcement agencies to arrest and prosecute persons who will cultivate ‘wee’ in the name of the new law.
