Stakeholders at the just ended consultative meeting on Broadcasting in Accra have recommended the suspension and withdrawal of frequency by the National Communications Authority to any media house that falls foul of the Broadcasting law when it comes into force.
Minister of Information Kojo Oppong Nkrumah made this known at a media briefing in Accra. The recommendations are part of a communique issued at the just-ended consultative meeting on broadcasting in Ghana.
Engagement on the Broadcasting bill is to among other things sanitize the media landscape while protecting press freedom and expression. Mr. Oppong Nkrumah noted that stakeholders also agreed to set up a joint stakeholder group under the National Media Commission to examine reports of unethical content and invoke the powers of the NCA, to take punitive action against offending broadcasters.
This is to help address the question of unethical broadcast content across the media divide.
To this end, stakeholder-led by the Ministry of Information, Ministry of Communications and Digitalization, Ministry of Justice and Attorney-General’s Department, National Media Commission, NMC, National Communications Authority, NCA, Ghana Journalists Association GJA, and Ghana Independent Broadcasters Association (GIBA) will sign a Memorandum of Co-operation within fourteen (14) days of the meeting, while formalizing arrangements for action.
