The Northern Regional capital, Tamale is the gateway to Northern Ghana. The city is one of the fastest-growing Metropolis in West Africa and serves as a transit point for vehicles traveling from Southern Ghana to the Sahelian region.
In recent times the city has witnessed a considerable increase in vehicular traffic particularly in the central business district.
In April 2019, President Akufo Addo cut the sod for the construction of the first Interchange in Northern Ghana. The project is part of the $1.5 billion road infrastructure project under the Sinohydro project agreement between Ghana and China.
Addressing the Chiefs and people of the Northern region during the commissioning of the project, the President, extolled the project as a significant achievement, saying it will not only enhance traffic flow but also give the Metropolis a face-lift
The Chinese Ambassador to Ghana, Lu Kun, expressed delight that the project has been completed on schedule despite threats from covid-19. He noted that China has had strong relations with Ghana for a long time and expressed the hope that, the interchange will further bridge the relationship between the two nations.
Despite the commissioning of the project, residents have called for sensitization on the use of the interchange to enable the project to achieve its purpose.
