Samuel Ayammah, Upper East Region.
More than 40 houses are either submerged or on the verge of being swallowed by flood waters, while hundreds of hectares of farmlands in Garu, Tempane and Pusiga Districts of the Kusaug Area in the Upper East Region are completely inundated.
This follows a surge in the Tamne irrigation dam, due to the release of water from its eight major tributaries and confluence.
The Construction of the Tamne irrigation dam started during the tenure of former President John Mahama. The irrigation scheme which is still under construction is expected to supply water to 3,250 acres of land.
More than 5,000 indirect and direct jobs are also expected to be created. The contractor on the dam is MUNISCO Ltd supervised by E.A. Kamaevor / RIOSAP Ltd, founded by the Export Development and Agricultural Investment Fund (EDAIF) and Government of Ghana.
Several hectares of farmlands with cash crops, roads, economic trees, among others have been completely destroyed. The affected communities include Gagbiri, Zambala, Bugri, Gaago, Kug-Zua, Gella-Kolog, Napaadi, Araziim, Kolsabilgu, Zulli and Kuugre.
Some of the farmers who spoke with GBC News, blamed the contractors and the engineers for no proper consultation before the start of the project.
An Assembly Member for the Zambala Electoral Area, Tahiru-Rahaman Youna, told GBC News that apart from the farmlands that are submerged, some residents have been rendered homeless.
Mr. Adam Abudu who is also a resident of the area, said major roads that link Garu, Gagbire, Bugri, Basyonde and the neighboring town of Cinkasse in Togo have been flooded and cut off.
Another resident, Mr. Yakubu told GBC NEWS, that schools and health facilities in the area have been affected by the floods.
The displaced residents are therefore sending an SOS to the government for assistance.
