Vice President Mahamudu Bawumia has cut the sod for work to commence on phase 4 of the TDC Kpone Affordable Housing project, which will see the construction of 832 housing units.

Dr Bawumia also commissioned the 1,072 housing units completed phase 1,2 and 3 projects.

At a short ceremony in Tema, Dr Bawumia said these apartments will go a long way to address the housing deficits in the country, stressing that the project is a testament to the government’s commitment to building affordable homes for all. He also indicated that a developer has been contracted through a joint venture to complete the Saglemi project.

The TDC Kpone Housing project, which started in 2006 under the Kufuor administration, was aimed at helping address the housing deficit in the country by providing affordable housing for all Ghanaians. However, the project was stalled under the erstwhile administration until it was revived under the Akufo Addo-Bawumia administration. The building, which has been constructed through TDC’s internally generated fund, is expected to enable low- and middle-income earners to purchase a decent place to live in.

Dr Bawumia said the government recognising the importance of housing, has taken the bold step to build these affordable homes, stressing that a thriving housing market is key to economic delivery as it provides jobs and accommodation for the growing population.

On the Saglemi project, Dr Bawumia said the project will be completed through a joint venture arrangement.

Minister of Works and Housing, Kojo Oppong Nkrumah, in a remark, said it is possible to achieve excellence in Ghana’s housing sector as the execution of phase 4 will not only enhance access to affordable housing but also serve as a cornerstone in broader efforts to bridge the housing gap across the country.

Managing Director of TDC, Alice Abena Ofori Atta, in a remark, was confident that phase 4 will be completed on time.

Ghana’s housing deficit is estimated at 1.8 million units, and the government has reiterated its commitment to address it.
