The Techiman Traditional Council in partnership with the Municipal Assembly and Zoomlion Ghana Limited, have launched a campaign to reintroduce monthly clean-up exercises.

The Campaign which saw residents participating in the first clean up in the Municipality in the relaunch is to officially start on the 29th of this month and will be replicated on the last Saturday of every month.

Speaking to GBC’s Radio Ghana on the sidelines of the event, the Omanhene of Techiman, Oseadeeyo Akumfi Ameyaw, said the initiative forms part of activities outlined by the Authorities to ensure the city takes up its holistic development.

Ghana is estimated to lose about $300 million every year due to poor sanitation.

As a strategy to address the menace, stakeholders have been devising innovative ideas to resolve it. Oseadeeyo Akumfi Ameyaw said sanitation is a social issue and for that matter, there is the need to remind the public to pay proper attention to it. The MCE, John Kofi Donyina bemoaned the rising cases of sanitation-related challenges in Techiman.

He said the town is noted for its commercial activities and this generates a lot of waste, hence the need for the initiative. A member of the committee for the initiative, Nana Owusu Antwi Boasiako said people who do not pay heed to the directive outlined for the monthly exercise will pay a penalty of not less than one thousand Cedis.
