Police in the Nkwanta South District have arrested Abubakari Mamuda, 32, a timber merchant in the District of the Oti Region for illegal connection.

Mr Mamuda was earlier disconnected by a team of officers from the Electricity Company of Ghana (ECG) led by the Acting District Manager Richard Bavor for non-payment of electricity bills

However during a night monitoring exercise conducted by the officials on November 5, 2019, they discovered that Mr Mamuda had reconnected power from the grid without authorization.

The ECG officials, therefore, informed the Police about his unlawful act and he was apprehended.

Mr Bavor said “we conducted the mass disconnection exercise because of the growing debt profile of the Company due to non-payment of bills by some recalcitrant customers.”

“The team during a monitoring exercise noticed that the meter had been reconnected and upon interrogation, the suspect, Mamuda, admitted to authorizing the illegal reconnection but failed to mention who did the reconnection,” he added.

Volta Regional Commercial Manager, ECG, S. Abrefa Besea, said the Company would intensify the exercise to maximize revenue and also continue the arrest perpetrators of such illegal activities.

He asked the public to desist from unlawful entry into ECG networks and illegal connections and thanked the police for the assistance.
