UPDATE:

Meanwhile, calm has been restored to the Kwame Nkrumah University of Science and Technology, KNUST, a day after some students of the University Hall and Unity Hall, went on the rampage.

Students who were receiving medical treatment at the University’s hospital as a result of injuries from the clashes, have also been discharged.

At about 5pm yesterday, a violent confrontation ensued between residents of the University Hall popularly called ‘Katanga Hall’ and their colleagues at the Unity Hall also known as ‘Conti Power’.

The incident occurred while students of Katanga Hall were on procession as part of their Hall Week Celebration on the main street of KNUST in front of the Unity Hall.

A misunderstanding ensued during which the Katanga Hall students started a violent attack on their counterparts.

The Hall Master of Unity Hall subsequently called back his students and the gates to the Hall were locked. The irate students vandalized about 10 private vehicles and destroyed other property including the Hall’s signage.

At the time of our News Team’s arrival at the University, heaps of stones believed to have been used by the students as weapons were being cleared.

Even though uneasy calm had been restored, there was heavy Police deployment on campus especially at the two feuding Halls.

The University Relations Officer of KNUST, Dr. Daniel Norris Bekoe, in an interview with GBC News, noted that, though the violent incident was spontaneous, the close circuit cameras around the campus will help management to identify the irate students for appropriate sanctions to be applied.
