The National Association of Registered Midwives, NARM, is now affiliated to the Trades Union Congress (TUC), Ghana. The association becomes the 23rd national union affiliated to the TUC. At an inaugural ceremony at the Hall of Trades Union in Accra, TUC Secretary General, Dr. Yaw Baah, together with the Chairman of the TUC, Alexander Nyarko Opoku, and the Vice Chairperson, Philomena Aba Sampson, presented the Certificate of Affiliation, the TUC Constitution and Policy documents to the Executives of NARM.
They urged members of the new affiliate to familiarize themselves with the contents of Constitution and Policy documents, and to actively participate in all TUC programmes.
Dr. Baah, who formally admitted the National Association of Registered Midwives, on behalf of the Executive Committee of the Congress, assured the members that they will work in unity for better conditions of service for midwives in Ghana.
He remarked “it is very difficult for a lone tree to withstand a storm. It is easier for a forest to withstand a storm, more than a lone tree, and therefore, you are joining a formidable family of TUC, which is already an established family of 76 years. You have the right to expect a lot from us {TUC}, but you also have the responsibility to give, let us help build a stronger trade union, so that we can all be proud of it.”
Dr. Baah, said the TUC has the vision of becoming the best trade Union in Africa, and was happy the new national affiliate has joined the Congress to achieve this feat, which will be remarkable, as it will sustain trade unionism and togetherness.
The President of the National Association of Registered Midwives, Mary Ofosu and her Vice President, Jonathan Yelefaari, commended the TUC leadership for accepting them as an affiliate national union. Madam Ofosu paid special tribute to the late Hajia Rhidwana Hawa Amoako-Agyei, for her immense contributions towards the TUC affiliation agenda.
Madam Ofosu, who described the affiliation inaugural ceremony as a great day in the life of members, said “we are no more NARM-Ghana, but we are NARM-Ghana, TUC. We know we have a big family that we are affiliated to, and we’re also counting on your support in all our activities. Dr. Baah, he knows all that we are going through, and with the help of TUC, we will go far to support our midwives.
