Two and a-half-year-old twins, a boy and a girl, tragically lost their lives on Thursday after falling into an abandoned galamsey pit filled to the brim with water.

The heart-wrenching incident occurred at Morkwaa, a farming community near Twifo Praso in the Twifo Atti-Morkwa District of the Central Region.

This tragedy marks the eighth fatality caused by uncovered galamsey pits in the district this year, according to local residents.

Mr. George Sam, the Assembly Member for the Morkwa Electoral Area, confirmed the incident to the Ghana News Agency.

He reported that the mother of the twins, who was unwell, had dozed off while the children were playing in the courtyard. Upon waking, she noticed their absence and conducted a thorough search of the house, but to no avail.

To her utmost sorrow and dismay, she discovered their lifeless bodies in the abandoned galamsey pit near her house, which had been neglected for a long time.

The police have since launched an investigation into the incident, and the twins’ bodies have been taken to the Twifo Praso Government Hospital morgue for preservation.

Concerned residents have expressed dismay over the numerous exposed galamsey pits in the community and have appealed to the Assembly to ensure that the land is reclaimed to prevent further loss of life.
