Update on Bawku skirmishes: Schools re-open, businesses return, Security reinforced

In an interview on the GTV Breakfast show with Correspondent Peter Agengre in the Upper East Regional on February 3, 2023, reports are clear that the situation in Bawku is calm.

Schools have reopened and workers have returned to their normal business as opposed to a few days ago, as the military is ensuring peace and calm in the region.

According to Peter Agengre, after a Regional Security Council Meeting, the authorities assured the people that every effort is in place to ensure normalcy.

Furthermore, a meeting would be held subsequently with stakeholders to agree on a lasting solution to the skirmishes.

Meanwhile, the Chairman of REGSEC and Regional Minister, Stephen Yakubu, reminded indigenes of Bawku and its environs to adhere to all the security measures put in place by REGSEC.

Furthermore, the Ghana Armed Forces (GAF) had earlier debunked allegations by some individuals in Bawku that soldiers deployed on ‘Operation Gongong’ to restore calm in the area were killing innocent Kusasi youth and women in their homes and communities.

GAF also said the allegations that military personnel have seized Zoogin, a Kusasi community, are false and unfounded.

In a statement, Director, Public Relations of GAF, Naval Captain Michael Addo Larbi, said information received from the National Investigations Bureau by the ‘Operation Gongong’ Team of GAF early this week indicates that passengers on board a yellow KIA Grand Bird Bus with Registration Number AS 3672-21 travelling from Accra to Missiga were attacked by unknown gunmen around Kpawelga on the Bawku Highways.
