The National Population Council says it chose to observe this year’s Population Day at James Town in Accra due to unplanned child birth and its devastating effect on sustainable development.
The Council has been championing the need for the country to strategise on child birth since over population will retard the nation’s development process.
Executive Director of the Council, Dr. Leticia Appiah said teenage pregnancy rate of ten percent is alarming and this should not be tolerated by a country looking to achieve the Sustainable Development Goals.
Dr. Appiah said attention is on James Town to help address the situation where girls between the ages of 15 and 18 are already mothers.
Meanwhile, the Bono Regional Director of the National Population Council, Davies Yeboah Aboagye has asked the public to take keen interest in population related issues especially the importance of Family Planning.
According to him, family planning plays a vital role in population size control. He was speaking to Radio Ghana on World Population Day.
