UTAG develops pact for 2024 presidential candidates

BY REGINA KWAPONG

The University Teachers Association of Ghana (UTAG), has announced that they have developed a pact for the 2024 presidential candidates to sign in order to be held accountable after they win power.

This development comes on the back of the Association declaring a halt to its nationwide strike action against illegal mining.

UTAG, after organised labour rescinded its decision to go on strike, independently proceeded on their strike to cause government to revoke the Legal Instrument that permits mining in forest reserves and water bodies.

In a press statement on Thursday, October 24, 2024, the National Executive Committee of UTAG announced that they will be ending their strike on Tuesday and also revealed a pact that will enable presidential candidates to live up to their concerns should they win power.

The decision to call off the strike was also described as one that could relieve students of what seems like punishment for wrongs they haven’t committed.

In response, members are urged to confirm or contest this decision, with the National Independent Elections Committee (NIEC) overseeing the process. A quick resolution is expected by October 28, 2024.

UTAG conveys profound gratitude to all members for their unwavering support during the strike along with heartfelt appreciation to stakeholders for their commitment to progress. Let’s remain united and resolute, standing together in vigilance as we advance towards a sustainable and prosperous future for Ghana.
