The University Teachers Association of Ghana has officially begun its indefinite nationwide strike to drum home the need for government to address its concerns soonest.
Some institutions GBC News visited indicate that lecturers have laid down their tools.
UTAG President at the University of Ghana, Dr. Samuel Nkumbaan said until government is ready to renegotiate with lecturers they have no option than lay down their tools.
Dr. Nkubaan called on government to resolve their conditions of service as soon as practicable.
Meanwhile, students at the University of Cape Coast have appealed to Government, the Fair Wages and Salaries Commission and UTAG to reach an agreement to halt the current strike by Lecturers.
GBC’s Central Regional Correspondent, Kofi Sakyiamah Pobi, who visited the University reports that the lecture halls are empty, whilst students were seen around the campus having group discussions. Some of them shared their views with our correspondent.
In a related development, Workers’ Unions of the Simon Dombo University of Business and Integrated Development Studies, SDD UBIDS at Wa on Monday, August 2, began an indefinite strike over what they term illegal migration of staff of the University to the Controller and Accountant General’s Department payroll IPPD2.
The Unions are University Teachers Association of Ghana, Ghana Association of University Administrators, Senior Staff Association of Universities of Ghana and the Teachers and Educational Workers Union.
Addressing a news conference at Wa in the Upper West Region UTAG President of the SDD-UBIDS, Dr Joseph Wulifan said the industrial action is necessitated by the move of Ghana Tertiary Education Commission to migrate staff of SDD-UBIDS and CKT University of Technology and Applied Sciences at Navrongo onto the Controller and Accountant General’s Department payroll IPPD2 in violation of the conditions precedent in the recent Agreement between the University Workers Unions in Ghana, the CAGD and the GTEC under the order of the National Labour Commission.
