UTAG suspends nationwide strike against illegal mining

By Emmanuel Oti Acheampong

The University Teachers Association of Ghana (UTAG) has announced the suspension of its nationwide strike, which was initiated on October 10, 2024, to protest against illegal mining activities, commonly referred to as “galamsey.”

The strike aimed to pressure the government to ban mining and prospecting for minerals in forest reserves, farms, and water bodies, as well as to raise awareness of the devastating environmental impact of such activities.

In a press release dated October 24, 2024, UTAG revealed that after thorough deliberations, its National Executive Committee (NEC) has decided to suspend the strike, effective Tuesday, October 29, 2024. The decision follows UTAG’s nationwide demonstration of commitment to addressing the issue of illegal mining, particularly focusing on protecting the environment for future generations.

The NEC is seeking its members’ affirmation or otherwise of the suspension directive, to be made official by Monday, October 28, 2024.

The strike has gained significant attention across the country, as UTAG members leveraged various platforms to raise public awareness and engage with key stakeholders. The association’s campaign included the development of a “Pact for Candidates of the 2024 Presidential Election,” urging political candidates to commit to fighting illegal mining. Discussions around this pact are ongoing.

Furthermore, UTAG has also called on the government to revoke the Environmental Protection (Mining in Forest Reserves) Regulation 2022 (L.I. 2462), which they argue enables continued degradation of vital natural resources.

They have recommended the expansion of the government’s task force on illegal mining to cover forest reserves more comprehensively.

The NEC has tasked the National Independent Elections Committee (NIEC) to facilitate the decision-making process regarding the strike suspension, with members expected to vote by October 28, 2024.

UTAG leadership, represented by Prof. Mamudu A. Akudugu, National President, and Dr. Eliasu Mumuni, National Secretary, expressed profound gratitude to members for their unwavering support during the strike. They emphasized the importance of staying united in the pursuit of a sustainable future for Ghana.

This move marks a critical step in the association’s ongoing advocacy against illegal mining, with further actions expected as discussions with stakeholders continue.
