Vice President Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia has called on the youth to have confidence in themselves as they have a lot to offer in the development of the economy.
He noted that while government initiates policies such as the Free Senior High School, (FSHS), the onus lies on the youth to take advantage of such policies and build on their knowledge base and make a difference wherever they find themselves.
Speaking at the International Youth Day Celebration at Akuapem-Mampong in the Eastern Region, Vice President Dr. Bawumia also announced that the Free Wi-Fi for students in the Tertiary and Senior High School levels will begin this year.
The International Youth Day is observed on August 12, every year to recognize and draw attention to youth issues worldwide.
This year’s celebration focused on Transforming Education.
This theme also falls in line with Ghana’s local theme:, “The role of the Youth in Contributing to Quality Education”.
The Chief Executive Officer of the National Youth Authority, Emmanuel Asigri said government taking cognizance of the role of the youth play in the development of the economy introduced the Youth Parliament Module.
This he said has helped given the youth an upper hand in the activities in Parliament.
He indictated that that a month-long voluntary youth camp project has also began to imbibe the spirit of volunteerism in the youth.
A Representative of the United Nations Population Fund, Niyi Odulape in a remark reiterated the commitment of the UNDPF to support the youth.
He announced that a New Youth Strategy, dubbed: “My Body, My Life, My World” has been introduced to engage the youth in various areas.
He appealed to all governments to support this course and keep the promises made to the youth.
Vice President Bawumia said the Ghana that government envisages, is one that will be driven by the youth.
This his why there has been a conscious effort to develop the human capital at the basic level.
He said the youth are the future leaders therefore they must take their destiny in their hands and be the change they want to see.
Students of the Mamfe Methodist Senior High School who excelled in aerobics were honored by the Vice President.
The Youth Parliament also demonstrated sittings and proceedings at Parliament, debating a presentation of the Free SHS by the Deputy Minister of Education .
