The Veterans Administration Ghana (VAG) has called for government subvention, citing that the only time they receive assistance is when veterans are admitted to the hospital, but they are left to cater for themselves once discharged.
According to the Public Relations Officer (PRO) of VAG, Ex WOI Bright Segbefia, the administration has not received any significant funding from the government in over three years. ‘’The last time VAG received government subvention was over three years ago and it was just 30,000 Ghana Cedis for about 19,000 veterans and their widows’’, he said.
Segbefia lamented that the VAG headquarters is constantly inundated with veterans seeking assistance with their medical bills, but the administration lacks the resources to provide adequate support. ‘’We can only throw our hands in the air in despair because we are not well resourced to take care of the medical bills of our veterans’’
“It is the wish of the administration to take up the medical bills of our veterans, but we are helpless due to the lack of funds,” Segbefia said on the GTV breakfast show while speaking about honoring veterans of World War II and the 28th February tragedy.
The VAG is calling on the government to provide urgent funding to enable the administration to fulfill its mandate of catering to the medical needs of Ghana’s veterans.
