Private legal Practitioner and Convener for Pressure Group, #FixTheCountry, Oliver Barker Vormawor, has been seen in a circulating video on social media crying out against what he called anti-democracy after the Police picked up some leaders of the Democracy Hub for defying orders to proceed with their demonstration.
The democracy hub, a Pressure Group based in Ghana, had a scheduled demonstration being filed against them by the Ghana Police Service at Court on September 20, 2023, deterring them from proceeding with the demonstration around the enclaves of the Jubilee House.
In the file against the protest, the police warned individuals and groups against the actions because they will be regarded as a threat to public safety.
In an attempt to defy the orders by the Police Service against the protest, scores of demonstrators still gathered at vantage points to converge and proceed with their planned demonstration.
The action led to the arrest of some fifty leaders and members of the protesters by the Greater Accra Regional Headquarters of the Ghana Police Service.
In response to the actions by the Police, Mr. Vormawor questioned if this indeed was the democracy they signed for. He mentioned that the actions of the leadership of the Police service are acting in the opposite direction of democracy.
“This is not the democracy we signed up for. This is not the country we signed up for and we are calling attention to everybody, all media houses, every individual… the Police have zero rights to arrest demonstrators in this democratic country.”
He further called on every well-meaning Ghanaian and Lawyer who has an interest in the preservation and promotion of democracy to visit the police headquarters to provide support and legal assistance to all who have been arrested.
