Mr Ben Alaglo, the Wa Municipal Electoral Commission (EC) Officer, says the ongoing voter registration exercise is progressing steadily in Wa with relatively low patronage of the exercise by the prospective voters.
At about 1430 HRS on Thursday when the Ghana News Agency (GNA) visited the registration centre at the EC office in Wa about 325 people had so far registered.
Out of the number, the Municipal EC Officer said 85 people registered on day one, 143 people registered on day two and 97 people registered at 1430 HRS on day three with no one registering offline.
Mr Alaglo, who said this in an interview with the GNA in Wa, however, said one person also attempted double registration and was detected by the registration machine bringing the total number of attempted double registrations at that centre to three.
“Some sort of people who are not well informed about the reason why this registration is being conducted are trying to pull us back being that today an old lady also came and wanted to register. Meanwhile she is already in the system, so the system detected such a person again.
This is the reason why the commission wanted to hold this registration in the office so that we do online registration, so we put a stop to double and multiple registrations,” he explained.
He indicated that if the registration was conducted offline in the communities there would have been double and multiple registrations thereby blotting the voter register.
Mr Alaglo told the GNA that they had so far not encountered any challenge with either the registration machines or the political party representatives at the registration centre.
He observed that the only challenges they had experienced so far in the registration process were power outages and disruptions by rain on day two of the exercise.
Mr Alaglo appealed to the Wa Municipal Assembly to support the Commission with a standby generator to intervene in case of a power outage so that the exercise will not be disrupted unduly.
Some of the registrants at the centre told the GNA that the exercise was going on smoothly and they were satisfied with the work of the officers so far.
Madam Zainab Iddrisu said she went to the centre at about 1000 HRS but had his voter’s ID card at about 1440 HRS.
She said: “It is going fast but if you don’t have patience, you will say it is delayed.
I did not have any issue with capturing my fingerprints or photo.”
