The Wa Municipal Assembly is to construct a ¢6.5 million shopping centre in a suburb called ‘Fadama”,  thanks to the support of the Ghana Secondary Cities programme.

Wa is the only Municipality in the Upper West Region out of 25 Municipalities selected across the country to benefit from the programme being sponsored by the World Bank.

GBC’s Emmanuel Mensah-Abludo reports that the Municipal Chief Executive (MCE) for Wa, Issahaku Tahiru Moomin who briefed the media in Wa on the implementation of sub-projects under the first phase of the programme, indicated that, the Assembly has interacted with various stakeholders including chiefs, tindambas [land owners] and Imams to update them on the scale and importance of the project.

Mr. Moomin shed light on the scope of work, saying “the scope of  project include 98 stores expandable to 120, a police post, a fire post, a crèche, a restaurant, a town hall, and then a paved area and all these have to be constructed and completed within the period of nine months”.

Touching on the fate of those who were doing business at the place earmarked for the shopping centre, the MCE, Mr Moomin indicated that all affected people have been resettled.

He stated that those have the capacity have given them spaces at the new market to develop for themselves whilst those who lack the capacity have been provided with stores constructed by the Assembly for them to still earn their livelihood.

The MCE equally talked about how the Assembly will manage the project on completion.

He said: “We have a plan to procure the services of management consultant who will take charge of the whole facility to manage it on behalf of the Municipal Assembly so that it does not fall among the pool of government property as business as usual.”

The consultant for the three-pronged project is Associated Beaver Consult.
