The West African Examination Council (WAEC), has hinted of possible legal action against Education Think Tank, Africa Education Watch.

The Think Tank on Wednesday, June 16, 2021, released a report on its assessment of the 2020 West African Secondary Schools Certificate Examination (WASSCE).

The report alleged a number of irregularities witnessed during the period of the examination, which it termed unprecedented. But WAEC said the Think Tank’s report is fraught with factual inaccuracies.

Speaking at a News Conference to address the supposed inaccuracies, the Council debunked the Africa Education Watch’s claims that examination papers were leaked to the public.

Meanwhile, Head of the Legal Department at WAEC, Rev. Victor Brew, says all options are on the table, including legal action against Africa Education Watch over its misleading report.

In a related development, Africa Education Watch, a Think Tank, has asked the West African Examination Council (WAEC), to accept in good faith criticisms aimed at reforming the Council to enhance its credibility, especially, in the conduct of examinations.

Executive Director of the Organisation, Kofi Asare said WAEC instead of wasting time and resources on face saving and PR gimmicks must open its doors to useful suggestions for the general good of the educational sector.

Speaking to GBC News in reaction to WAEC’s threat to sue Africa Education Watch over its findings titled “WASSCE 2020 Independent Assessment Report” which alleged a number of irregularities witnessed during the period of the examination, Mr. Asare said his Organisation is least intimidated by the development as in his view, examination malpractice under WAEC is nothing new.

The Educationist debunked the assertion by WAEC that the “WASSCE 2020 Independent Assessment Report” is riddled with factual inaccuracies. He said Africa Education Watch exists to influence policy formulation and direction of education and not to appease individual institutions.
