After a successful signing of an MoU with the Ghana Irrigation Development Authority, the International Water Management Institute has laid bare its strategies for the attainment of A ‘Water Secure world’.
These strategies form part of the Institute’s agenda and strategic framework set up for both the Eastern and Central African Regions. The strategies are scheduled to take place from 2024- 2030.
In a conference held in Accra on April 24, 2024 with attendance by representatives of Water and Sanitation as well as climate-related institutions across the Western and Central African Regions, the IWMI reiterated its global mandate of helping to attain water security.
In an opening remarks and presentation of the global review by the Director General of the IWMI, Dr. Mark Smith, he revealed that an interview conducted by his outfit revealed what they termed as the ‘Five wicked Problems of Water’.
According to Dr. Smith, these ‘wicked’ problems of water which he listed as Hunger, Poverty and Exclusion, Climate beyond 2°c, Ecosystem breakdown and Deep uncertainty can be solved with their strategic framework and levers.
In the Institute’s bid to curb these problems of water in Central and Western Africa, it outlined the following as its Strategic framework: Alleviating Water risk, Reducing global inequalities and Managing Water Sustainability.
Even though the IWMI has already begun work from their strategic framework and agenda, the institute is keen on using its innovative, research and collaborative and partnership strengths in making sure their targets are achieved and aligned with that of the United Nations SDGs.
