Ghana Journalists Association (GJA) President Albert Kwabena Dwumfour has called on Finance Minister Dr. Mohammed Amin Adam to prioritize the financial well-being of journalists and resource state-owned media to effectively fulfill their mandate.

Despite economic challenges, journalists remain among the lowest-paid professionals in Ghana.

Speaking at the Northern Regional GJA Awards in Tamale, Dwumfour emphasized that improving state-funded journalists’ remuneration would encourage private media owners to follow suit. He noted the timely theme of the awards, “Ensuring Violence-Free Elections: The Role of the Media,” given Ghana’s upcoming crucial election.

The 2023 National State of the Media Report highlights the poor working conditions of journalists in both public and private sectors.

Dwumfour urged the Speaker of Parliament to support a private member’s bill promoting media freedom and ensuring a good welfare regime for journalists, who often retire in poverty.

Dwumfour encouraged the media to prioritize professionalism, objectivity, and high ethical standards in their reporting.

He stressed the importance of the media’s watchdog role in protecting democracy, responsibly informing, educating, and holding those in power accountable.

Mr. Dwumfour commended the media’s advocacy against illegal mining and urged continued pressure on authorities to protect the environment.

He also called for frequent updates on the ad hoc Ministerial Committee’s progress in addressing illegal mining.
