Winners of the 2021 World Skills Ghana National Competition have paid a courtesy call on Vice President Mahamudu Bawumia at the Jubilee House in Accra. The visit afforded the students the opportunity to present their medals to the Vice President. In a remark, Vice President Bawumia stressed the need for the youthful population to take keen interest in skills acquisition as the world is moving towards its development and not certificate acquisition. He applauded the winners and urged them to showcase their talent on the African and global stages.

The National Skills Competition created a platform for competitors to showcase their skills in welding, bricklaying, carpentry, auto body repair, mechatronics, electrical installation, automobile technology, mechanical engineering cad, IT software solutions for business, graphic design technology, cooking, fashion technology and beauty therapy. 73 students drawn from the various Technical Institutes and Universities across the country took part in the competition which was organized by the Council for Technical and Vocational Education Training (COTVET). Out of this number, 15 excelled and won gold medals. Vice President Bawumia stressed that the future of the economy is skills acquisition and not just certificates. This is why the government has over the years invested in TVET to make the sector more vibrant.

Dr. Bawumia while congratulating the winners for their excellent performance in the Ghana Skills Competition, urged them to go out and make Ghana proud in the upcoming Africa Skills Competition in Namibia next year and subsequently on the global stage.

Ghana is currently the 85th member of World Skills Development which is focused on developing the skills and talents of the youth. The team presented a plaque to Vice President Bawumia for his continuous support to TVET education.
