The Krontihene of Wirenkyiren Amanfrom in the Abuakwa South Municipality of the Eastern Region, Dr. Nana Awuah Kwakye Marfo has emphatically stated that they will continue to resist any illegal mining activities popularly known as “galamsey” in the community. He noted that the country has lost the fight against galamsey due to lack of political will.
However, he said they will use their chieftaincy powers to help prevent galamsey in their community. Dr. Nana Kwakye Marfo was speaking during the celebration of the 40th Anniversary of the Enstoolment of Barima Ofosuhene Peprah as Chief of Wirenkyiren Amanfrom which coincided with his 70th Birthday.
Dr. Nana Awuah Kwakye Marfo reiterated that they as sub-chiefs will continue to support Barima Ofosuhene Peprah to resist illegal mining activities in the community which is destroying and degrading lands, forest reserves and water bodies in the country. He also issued an ultimatum to nomadic herdsmen on their land up till December 30 to vacate their land or else they will use legal means to force them out of their land. He advised the youth to desist shedding their blood and sweat for politicians, especially during this political season.
The Chief of Wirenkyiren Amanfrom, Barima Ofosuhene Peprah commended the sub-chiefs and community members for being supportive to him as their support has brought him this far. He advised all to stay focused and committed to whatever they intend to achieve in life.
The Nkosuohene of Wirenkyiren Amanfrom and Dwantuahene of Akyem Abuakwa, Nana Asiaa Benneh Beyeeman revealed that years ago they realized that the performance of pupils in the community is abysmal, so they decided to organize extra classes for the pupils. This, she said has helped improve pupil’s performance in the Basic Education Certificate Examination for the past two to three years.
The celebration of the 40th Anniversary of the Enstoolment of Barima Ofosuhene Peprah as Chief of Wirenkyiren Amanfrom which coincided with his 70th Birthday Celebration brought together numerous people in the community and surrounding communities from traditional leaders, community members, religious groups and business organizations.
Barima Ofosuhene Peprah was enstooled as the chief of Wirenkyiren Amanfrom after the demise of his late uncle Barima Danso Peprah in the year 1983. Since his enstoolment as the chief of the community, Barima Ofosuhene Peprah with support from his sub-chiefs and community members has embarked on numerous projects to help promote development in the community.
