The Volta/Oti Regional Women Committee of the Health Services Workers’ Union (HSWU) has added its voice to calls on government to scrap taxes on the importation of sanitary pads to make them affordable.
The group believes the move will also make it accessible for vulnerable females especially those in remote areas.
The Committee made the call when members donated packs of sanitary pads to students of the St. Catherine Girls Senior High School at Agbakope in the South Tongu District of the Volta Region as part of the celebration of World Menstrual Hygiene Day yesterday.
The Committee also sensitized the students on the importance of good menstrual hygiene management through practical lessons.
The Volta/Oti Regional Women Committee Chairperson of HSWU, Mabel Duvor in an interview with GBC news said the gesture forms part of their outreach programmes to promote healthy living especially for vulnerable groups in society.
She urged other groups to support initiatives that will guide and propel young girls to harness their full potential.
The Volta/Oti Regional Chairman of HSWU, Emmanuel Bruno Gattor who accompanied the Committee, encouraged parents to periodically provide their girl children with sanitary pads to ensure proper menstrual care.
He urged government to scrap taxes on sanitary pads to make them affordable on the market.
An Assistant Headmistress of the school, Emelia Affrim, hoped the gesture and practical lessons will broaden the horizon of the girls to practice good personal hygiene.
