Human Rights Activist and Member of Parliament (MP) for Madina, Francis Xavier-Sosu has debunked suggestions that the scrapping of the death sentence as a form of punishment in Ghana will lead to an increase in crime.
Mr. Xavier-Sosu who championed the repeal of the sentence through a Private Member’s Bill says evidence from elsewhere shows that countries without the death sentence record lower crime rates whereas countries with the death sentence witness higher crime rates.
According to him, even though Ghana has not executed anyone for the past 30 years, it is still very significant that it has been removed, because “if it remains in the law, it could be used at any time”.
