The World Bank is assisting with the construction of decentralised sewerage systems for Ashaiman New Town and Bankuman in the Tema Municipality.

Under this project, Septic tanks in both communities will be connected to a decentralised waste treatment plant instead of the use of cesspit tanks which then produces treated waste water for irrigation purposes in the two communities.

The projects which are expected to start on March 16, 2020 includes the laying of more than 24 kilometres of sewer pipeline, the construction of 420 manholes and 4,805 household sewer connections in Ashaiman.

The Minister of Sanitation, Ms Cecilia Abena Dapaah, signed the agreement for the project and expressed gratitude to the World Bank for its support.

Ms Dapaah said the government has put in place many plans and resources to make sure that by 2030, all communities in the country would be open-defecation free in line with the UN Sustainable Development Goals.
