The Minority Leader and Member of Parliament for Effutu Constituency in the Central region, Mr. Alexander Afenyo-Markin has alleged that the National Democratic Congress (NDC) members on the Parliament’s Appointments Committee disregarded Speaker Alban Sumana Kingsford Bagbin’s directive to halt the ministerial vetting until the Appointments Committee is reconstituted.
Despite controversies surrounding the Speaker’s directive, the Majority of members of the Appointments Committee proceeded with the vetting process, prompting criticism from the Minority.
Addressing some members of the Parliamentary Press Corps (PPC) at a media briefing on Monday, February 3, 2025, Minority Leader explained that Speaker Bagbin, in his ruling on Friday, 31st January 2025 had instructed the Selection Committee to immediately reconstitute the Appointments Committee a directive the Majority disregarded.
The Majority threw caution to the wind and proceeded with the vetting despite the Speaker’s directive, which they believe effectively dissolved the Appointments Committee. Mr. Afenyo-Markin reiterated.
“We are aware that the NDC majority itself has disrespected Mr. Speaker’s orders. In fact on the day, one of his consequential orders was that the Selection Committee must meet immediately and reconstitute the appointment committee.
The NDC majority decided to proceed with the vetting without any due regard,” he stated
The Minority leader hinted that his side will engage with the Speaker to rescind his decision to suspend the four MPs.
