The nominee for Local Government Minister, Mr. Ahmed Ibrahim, has pledged to ensure mutual respect between Members of Parliament (MPs) and Metropolitan, Municipal, and District Chief Executives (MMDCEs) to promote effective governance.

Speaking to the Appointments Committee of Parliament on Tuesday, January 21, Mr. Ibrahim emphasized the critical role of collaboration between MPs and MMDCEs in driving development at the local level.
“I will not allow any DCE to disrespect any Member of Parliament,” he asserted. “In the same way, I’ll ensure there is a common platform for smooth communication between MPs and DCEs.”

The nominee stressed the importance of cooperation between the two groups to ensure that development projects and policies are implemented effectively. He highlighted ongoing challenges, including instances where some MMDCEs deliberately undermine MPs due to personal political ambitions.
“Some DCEs have been known to undermine MPs because they are interested in contesting the same seats,” Mr. Ibrahim noted. “This behaviour disrupts governance and compromises the development agenda.”

To address these challenges, Mr. Ibrahim outlined plans to establish a common platform for dialogue between MPs and MMDCEs. He believes this initiative will enhance coordination, reduce tensions, and encourage understanding between the two offices.
“My commitment is to maintain a harmonious and productive working relationship between MPs and DCEs. This is essential for advancing the goals of the government and addressing the needs of local communities,” he said.
Mr. Ibrahim continued to reiterate his dedication to fostering collaboration and ensuring that governance at the local level remains focused on delivering essential services to the public.
